On December 5, 2022, the Jagiellonian Research Center for African Studies delegation (prof. Robert Kłosowicz, dr. Joanna Mormul) visited the Municipal Museum in Żory, at the invitation of the director of the facility, Dr. Lucjan Buchalik, ethnologist, Africanist, outstanding researcher of the Dogon ethnic group inhabiting Mali. During the meeting, which was also attended by Ewa Wołoszyn, M.A., representing the Africanist Museum in Olkusz, the issue of future cooperation between the Jagiellonian Research Center for African Studies, the Municipal Museum in Żory and the Africanist Museum in Olkusz was discussed.

The Municipal Museum in Żory is a thriving modern cultural institution that conducts scientific research and can pride itself on having interesting ethnographic regional and non-European collections, among which predominate exhibits from Africa. The Museum’s African collection began with the acquisition of objects from West Africa. Over time, however, objects from other regions of the continent also started to be collected. Currently, the collection has over 4,000 items that have been obtained through purchases and donations or brought from field research in Africa.

We encourage you to visit the Municipal Museum in Żory, more information on the Museum's website.
