An academic conference entitled “Dysfunkcyjność. Problem wewnętrzny – wyzwanie globalne/Dysfunctionality. An Internal Problem – A Global Challenge” took place on 15th March 2018 in the Jagiellonian University’s Auditorium Maximum. The conference was organised thanks to the cooperation between three academic clubs active in the Jagiellonian University’s Institute of Political Science and International Relations – the JU International Relations Students’ Society, the JU Society of Geopolitical Thought and the JU National Security Society under the patronage of the Jagiellonian Research Center for African Studies.

The official opening of the conference was conducted by the Vice-Dean for Didactic Issues at the JU Faculty of International and Political Studies, Prof. Paweł Laidler and the Director of the JU Institute of Political Science and International Relations, Prof. Robert Kłosowicz.

Researchers from institutions other than the Jagiellonian University were also invited to participate in the conference, including the University of Warsaw, the Pedagogical University of Cracow and the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.

During the first conference panel, topics related to the challenges and threats to security facing the countries of the African continent were approached as the result of the phenomenon of the dysfunctionality of the state. The second panel was dedicated to the dysfunctional countries of Latin America. A students’ panel was also organized, during which Jagiellonian University students could present their papers about dysfunctional states.

The conference concluded with an event promoting the newest book by Prof. Robert Kłosowicz, entitled “Konteksty dysfunkcyjności państw Afryki Subsaharyjskiej” [The Contexts of State Dysfunctionality in Sub-Saharan Africa], which took place in the Jagiellonian Library.
